Key Findings

In-depth analysis from 1,247 business owners and finance managers across India.

1

The Spreadsheet Trap

74% of Indian SMBs with under 50 employees use Excel or Google Sheets as their primary operational tool. The average business maintains 12 separate spreadsheets for different functions — creating data silos, version conflicts, and a knowledge dependency on one or two people who built the sheets. When those people leave, the business loses operational intelligence.

2

The GST Compliance Burden

Since GST was introduced in 2017, Indian SMBs have added an average of 1.4 full-time equivalent hours per employee per month in compliance overhead. For a 20-person business, that's 28 person-hours every month — roughly ₹28,000 in salary cost — spent purely on GST reconciliation, return filing, and e-way bill generation.

3

The Payroll Compliance Gap

India's payroll compliance framework — PF, ESIC, PT, LWF, gratuity, and TDS — varies by state, salary bracket, and employee category. Our survey found that 58% of Indian SMBs have received at least one compliance notice in the past three years. Of those, 71% said the issue was a calculation error, not intentional non-compliance.

4

The Software Fragmentation Problem

The average Indian SMB with 15–50 employees subscribes to 5.3 different software tools. These rarely integrate — data is manually transferred between systems, or entirely duplicated. Beyond the ₹18,400/month average cost, the fragmentation costs are hidden: training time, context-switching, missed data, and delayed decisions.

📊 5.3 software tools on average — with near-zero integration

5

The WhatsApp CRM

WhatsApp has become the de facto CRM for Indian SMBs. Leads come in, quotes are sent, follow-ups happen, and orders are confirmed — all in the same chat. 68% of businesses we surveyed said their 'CRM' is a combination of WhatsApp, a notebook, and memory. The result: an average of 23% of leads are never followed up because they get buried in threads.

6

AI Adoption: Early but Accelerating

32% of Indian SMBs surveyed have begun using AI tools for at least one business function — predominantly content writing, customer communication, and basic data analysis. However, only 7% have integrated AI into their core operations (payroll, billing, CRM). This gap represents the largest efficiency opportunity for Indian businesses in 2026.
